In geosynthetic installation details are very important, if not critical to the success of the installation. Great care is taken in the design and materials selection processes of geosynthetics, as they usually fulfill a critical role in project success. Installation and Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) typically receive less care. Our industry has programs and organizations dedicated to these topics (IAGI: International Association of Geosynthetic Installers, and the certification arm of the Geosynthetic Institute (the Geosynthetic Certification Institute-Inspectors Certification Program (GCI-ICP)) and others. Yet, these organizations and programs are not always utilized. Further there are some installation details that add great value to the installation and success of the project that some engineers practice and others ignore. Some installation activities consume a great deal of time and attention (as-built drawings for example) yet do little or nothing to add to the performance of the project.
